Frontispiece Frame Repriced as a Master Sheet
This was not made to be looked at. Its center is a void by design—a large reserved field cut to vanish under set type, the title that never came. Read the sheet as it was built and the rockwork, the cascade, the leafage stop being the subject; they are margin, the worked edge of a planned absence. The brush is genuinely sure: graded gray washes carry fissured stone from chalky highlight into damp shadow, white heightening catches the wet rim of the cliff, and the owl on its ledge is watched with a steadiness the snarling creature at the pool never quite earns. All of it borders nothing. The "Niderist fc:" cut into the rock is a tradesman's mark on a tool; the small stamp at lower right is a later buyer's receipt, recording the day the tool was reclassified as furniture.
The skill is not in question; the assignment is. A printer wanted gravity around a frontispiece and got it—fully resolved, decorative system and all—delivered by a maker who knew precisely what the buyer required and charged for the surround, not the hole. What connoisseurship did afterward was simple and lucrative: forget the commission, lose the type, and rebill the empty field as "composition," the wash as "virtuosity," the framing habit as "authorship." The invoice was reissued under a man's name.
Set this beside Safavid album leaves, where tonal ink rockwork and perched birds were a finished pictorial end, complete on a sheet small enough to be held in a hand and returned to. That object earned its keep by being looked at; this one earned its keep by being covered. It now carries a master's price because the printer who ordered the gap is dead and cannot correct the ledger. A service drawing, large and fixed and impossible to carry, sold at last as the thing it was hired to disappear behind. — TA
